project Output path with absolute path

It appears that VS2005 wants to convert the project Output path from an absolute path to a relative one if the project directory and the Output directory reside in the same drive. So a "C:\solution\outputs\project\" path becomes "..\..\..\..\..\solution\outputs\project\". The Test Manager .vsmdi file suffers from the same behaviour.

I do not see an option to change this behavior; it is messing with the fixed-assembly-path standard our team is trying to practise. Is there some option somewhere for this?
