One of the biggest problems with today’s enterprise performance management (EPM) solutions is the cobbled-together, stopgap approach that most vendors and users take toward EPM as a discipline. All too frequently, a vendor provides its customer with a point product to address one challenge (say, consolidation), and a separate product for another (say, planning and forecasting, or governance, risk and compliance), without prior consideration or commitment to how well these different applications work together. Thus, while each product may be capable of solving a specific business problem, when evaluated together the products fail to interoperate to solve the larger enterprisewide problems that impede successful EPM.
