Crazy download speed

I happen to be downloading something off Microsoft download site today and guess what! The first time in a long time that I find starhub at all useful! They were serving the download at 1.25mb/sec! WOW!

If they could make this consistant for all sites that would be fabulous! Well I guess it also depends on what speed the server could spit content to me too! But I hate it a lot especially at night when the kids in the neighbourhood are back from school and etc and start playing online games, which totally hogg up the network!

Have you thought this was possible?

Some of you guys who are into game development would have heard about the Game Developer's Conference (GDC) which co-incidentally happened to be in San-Francisco this year. Where I'd be going in the end of the month for some work assignments. However, I'd miss GDC though (since it's over already). Here's a really cool piece of technology showcased during the event (photos courtesy of CNET Networks)

This technology will require you to put on a headset which would pick up the signals from your brains and allow you to play game without any contacts. Some really cool stuff! The company behind this cool piece of technology is Emotiv Systems. whom expects to make this technology available next year. Who knows? Microsoft's XBOX team might just buy them over entirely to compete with Nintendo's Wii.

Last but not least, researchers at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne have managed to create a robot which is able to move both in land and in water. WOW! If they ever make this robot a cosumer technology, I'd be the first to buy it. Haha! Who knows? Send it to go to some beachers overseas to pick seashells for me?

IP Ranges you should not scan

The Government Security website at http://www.governmentsecurity.org has produced a nice list of IP address you should be aware of as a tester.  They are mostly government agencies addresses and could quickly get you in trouble if you would scan them by mistake.

Properties Processing in C# 3.0

Many a times when you're writing C# code, you'd be asking yourself "Why on earth do I need to include properties when it's just doing nother more then making my fields public"?

Well, there's actually a very valid reason for keeping fields private.

  1. Encapsulation
  2. Many databinding relation operations actually make use of Properties a whole lot!

However, in C# 3.0, it eliminates the need for you to write a whole lot of those code by introducing this feature called "automatic properties". So what it allows you to do is to write

public class Weather
{
     public string City  { get; set; }
     public double Degree { get; set; }
}

instead of

public class Weather
{
     private string _city;
     private string _degree;

     public string City
     {
          get
          {
               return this._city;
          }
          set
          {
               this._city = value;
          }
     }
     public double Degree
     {
          get
          {
               return this._degree;
          }
          set
          {
               this._degree = value;
          }
     }
}

When the new C# compiler encounters an empty get/set property implementation like above, it will now automatically generate a private field for you within your class, and implement a public getter and setter property implementation to it. 

The benefit of this is that from a type-contract perspective, the class looks exactly like it did with our first (more verbose) implementation above.  This means that, unlike public fields, you can in the future add validation logic within your property setter implementation without having to change any external component that references your class.

Web.Config Configuration Encryption

Recently, I've been working on quite a number of projects to do with enterprise web application development, and many a times, I got request to have all encryption strings encrypted. Of course, even if they didn't tell me to do so, I'd also do so as it's just too dangerous to keep it in plaintext.

So do you have to specifically write a special dll to do this task or use the cryptographic services in .NET to do so? The answer is no! ASP.NET 2.0 provides you such capabilities. Infact, this has already been available in ASP.NET 1.1. Just that ASP.NET 2.0 includes the option to do so with DPAPI too!

ASP.NET 2.0 supports two forms of encryptions:

  • RSA (a form of asymmetric encryption)
  • DPAPI

RSA is recommended as DPAPI makes use of key that are machine-specific. So that doesn't sound too portable. Well, as RSA is a 1024 bit block encryption, if you do want to encrypt data-strings larger then that, you might want to consider making use of Envelop Encryption, where you'd

  1. Generate a random private key
  2. Encrypt the string with a symmetric encryption algorithm (e.g. 3DES, AES) using the randomly generated private key
  3. Encrypt the random private key using RSA

Why so? This would thus help you to solve any form of key distribution problems and also increase the encryption speed. Symmetric Encryption is typically 10,000 times faster then Asymmetric-Key. This makes senses when you look at the number of keys used.

In this example, DPAPI is used. However, if you do want to make use of RSA to make your code portable, you'd need to change "DataProtectionConfigurationProvider" to "RSAProtectedConfigurationProvider".
