Where is Search services in W2K8?

Following on my previous posting about setting up Win2k8 on my laptop, I realised that I cannot do Instant Search due to some missing component / services. These are the steps to solve it:

1) Start Server Manager

2) Click on Roles in the left navigation pane

3) Select Add Role in the Roles Summary pane to the right

4) Select the File Services role and click Next

5) Select the Windows Search role service

Losing sleep over Hyper-V

Over the week, I managed to install Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition w/Hyper V on my Compaq 6510b laptop. Not the best of the equipment to run hardware virtualisation but it made it easier for me to do my work. When I've finally added Hyper V feature to my laptop and was about to go for a meeting, I realised that there was no sleep/hibernate option anymore. A quick google reveals the truth - http://blogs.technet.com/doxley/archive/2008/02/13/insomnia-causing-hyper-v.aspx, apparently, I've been marginalised as a geek minority user whom the product team doesn't feel justified to spend time and effort (for the sleep + hyper-V).

What do you wanna to hear about VS2008/.NET 3.5?

I'm sure most of you are aware that VS2008/.NET 3.5 & W2K8 are already RTM-ed and there will be global launch of the software, including Singapore. Riding on the success of previous events like VS2005 & Sql Server 2005 launch, LOVE Launch and Community Technology Update, we'll be arranging for another joint UG effort. Before we decide on what topics should be presented during the day long (not confirmed yet) session, I would like to gather some inputs on what you wish to learn about? We'll aim to cover > Level 200 series for this event and appreciate any inputs from any of you. Either add a comment to this post or drop me an email at microlau_at_sgdotnet_dot_org.

Thanks and I hope to hear from you!

Career switch...

Yes, as the title suggests, I've made a career switch. I was previously working with a Senior Consultant with a prestigous .NET consultancy company (*hint hint*), but in reality, I was little more than a code monkey and at best, leading a bunch of code monkeys Stick out tongue Not that it's bad or unglamorous, I have a stronger interest to pursue a career in solutioning or pre-sales, which is why I've joined another large System Integrator as a Solution Architect. Big role for me to fill in, I suppose I have lots to learn in order to ensure that my KPIs are met (Thanks for Kit Kai for recommending me in).

What does this mean for my community activites? Well, there's no much of an impact. I'll still be very focussed on running the user group.

What does this mean for my family? Tat's the key difference Wink I'm hoping that since I'll be out of the delivery rat-race, I will have more control (note. it's control, not reduced hours) over my working hours, meaning that I will be able to spend more time w/my precious daughter Bridgette. making sure that her very first words are 'Hello World'.
