Virtual Server also suffers the same problem. However, there isn't a hot fix available. It will be released in SP1
Those using SBS 2003 should not upgrade, but wait for SBS SP1 instead. Check it out here. http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/5/a/15a3de06-914b-41c2-a2a5-c62b1ac5a22e/SP1_KnownIssues.htm
Oh dear... more trips to Sg this year. :)
April's Fool lah bradder
How you know?
Man, I was fooled! It was actually April Fool's Joke! But here are some other people that did some nice "transparent" screens. http://www.flickr.com/groups/transparentscreens/
Sigh... My cluster is corrupted... Have to reinstall, because I can't find any resource to help me make a node not a member of a cluster that is down...
Wah! So good. I also want a boss like that.
Congrats! Those photos are really impressive!
LOL...
> Need to work on my ..., and my event organising skills man, and fast.. What event organizing skills are you talking about ? ;) I think you are doing fine ... :)
Thanks for the encouragement, but I don't think so. I see the way Tristan organise an event and the way I do it, its has very different outcome. Don't want to go into specifics in case I offend people. :)
Oh... you poor thing. I thought you were all ready to go to work. You were looking forward to it on Thursday. How are you feeling now?
Take care and get more sleep! Get well soon =)
Something wierd is happening to me...
Don't play a fool with your heart man! Go for a checkup. Don't go for ECG, go for something better. I think you are probably too stressed up. Relax. I don't want anything to happen to my 'Marketing guy' ;)
The women should be chased out; they have no right to enter a male toilet.
Rather than reporting it here and hoping a doctor will chance upon your blog, I recommend going for a medical checkup.
Yah, I know. We can actually use the law against them, I heard. I can't believe they actually resort to using the guy's restroom. Those aunts are actually mid 30s and are working executives in the retail industry...
I don't think its stress related. I wanted to go to the doctors today, but held up by work again. Boss tell me to go tomorrow morning. I GOT A NICE NICE BOSS! :)
Hi Kit Kai, Do you know Microsoft is going against people who release longhorn screenshots? I saw it in the news last week. I think you better scrap it off before they send you any email. Cheers.
Hmm, I heard of PearPc but never use it before. So after we install in on top on of windows, run it, we can install Power PC OS like Tiger on it ?
Yup. There is an entry in my blog earlier that teaches you how to install panther... Done by one of the virtual PC mvps. I followed it and got my first mac running!
Wow..interesting, can u direct me to that post? Want to try it too, haha =)
Here you go. http://www.robertmoir.co.uk/win/pearpc/index.html Later I try to provide some screen shots, when I can find the time.
Kit, what project aru using Paladin on? I'm about to embark on a pet project using Paladin...Any tips to share? :P
Two projects. One is for a newsletter management system. One is for a asset management system. (Look at the stupid naming convention!)
Hit enter too fast... What tips are u looking at?
Ok, thnks!
Hmm... i'm not able to successfully enable the g4 emulation :(
Take care and get more rest =)
Special thanks to Mike Walsh for reviewing
Special thanks to Aaron Seet for reviewing
Wah..Tat's good. How do you get red-carpet subscription?
Because I'm mvp :)
I ponder which office can truly achieve 'politics-less' state. Well, seriously, again, I ponder what can be the "motivation" of my company? ;P
The more I watch, it seems there are politics at the management level, where which design of the spacecraft to use. When the decision has to be made on who steps on the moon first, also shows politics. But the nice thing is, these politics goes away, when every focuses on the mission at hand. You can tell that when Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon, the other guy (forgot the name) was sooooo sad... But they all make decisions for the good of the mission, and that is where politics dissolve. Many project don't even bother to do envisioning (In the first place, do they know...) But the video really shows the power of envisioning...
Well, how about <i>games</i>? :)
Ha ha... Go to underdog games http://www.the-underdogs.org/ You might have a chance they would run :)
An admirer i guess...
LOL... Well if there is a fire drill in Twin Towers... my gosh... going down the stairs case can kill ppl... Is your office's building tall?
Yah man... Mine is at 17th storey...
Kit Kai ?!?!?! If I were you, I will seriously take a step back and look / reflect on all my friends and do a major re-org to see who stays and who doesnt ;) On the other hand, this could be just a tiny piece of a grand big conspiracy. Some ppl could be forcing you to blog about this, for whatever planned reasons ...
Wow.. you serious.. geez.. wonder who is that?
I think that thumbdrive belong to triplez.. He told me that he lost his thumbdrive few days ago.. You might want to check with him.. Btw, that Jason Wu.. i think is his friend..
Looks like Life Preservation has indeed been downgraded to secondary importance. Ah, the businesses of today's world.
Where did you the new version? I wasn't notified. Also, I am _not_sure_ if this programme is _publicly_ known....
Its auto updated, I believe. Its still not as stable as I would like it to. After a day of updating, it freezes again. Of course its not public.
Next year? Cool..Congrats way in advance! Give me a tinker if you need help...
Very useful. I use onenote a lot..hehe
That's really awesome! I will work hard to get Paladin 0.9.0 RTM out soon.
Too bad, who ask you don't attend the conference? ;p No $$$ for accomodation ... if not I will come as I obtained a VIP pass too :(
Hmm...Then it should be called EWP - Electronic Walkway Pricing. But wait, we dun have any IU on ourselves...Hmm..Maybe we should just make FULL use of EzeLink.
This is really good news, Kit Kai. I pray and wish the best for you and your mother and I hope she recovers well. Take care now.
Praise be to Him! And dont stop giving Glory! Thank You JC!
It doesn't look much like a improvement to me. During updating, the screen doesn't refresh causing a big grey patch on my screen. I think they better rewrite it in C++ ;)
Come to think of it... was it SMART that softwaremaker taught me?
Cool, I will check it out
psst.... _don't_ give LTA any ideas.....
Downloaded it. There are source codes and webcasts inside the distribution. Check it out...
Nice... wonder is this real OS or just a fake simulation?
Of course its not real. But the website is really cool
It's only a "wow" factor for web developers, really. Let a non-technical person look at it, like my cousin yesterday, and the most likely impression would be, "so? what does it do?"
Of course... Of course... I wonder if we could put it on active desktop...
Ha ha... i'm still getting some problems with it...
I know this website some time ago, but I was thinking wat is the backend technology that powers it? Purely javascipt?

It is the Lenova ThinkPad X41 Tablet. > I've never seen him so happy before, even though he is sick I am sick BUT I am NOT happy. In fact, I think I am always NOT happy. Are you sure you are not speaking to a happy clone of me ? Thanks ! :)
> can't wait for IBM tablet to come out ... >Hate to burst your bubble, it is not called IBM anymore and will never be anymore. It is the Lenova ThinkPad X41 Tablet. Its still an IBM, as long as it shell remains :) >I am sick BUT I am NOT happy. In fact, I think I am always NOT happy. Are you sure you are not speaking to a happy clone of me ? Why you not happy? How to cheer you up?
Wait a second.. william is uncle of kit kai... hmm... how come you call him uncle william? Wahhh
We call each other uncle man... He call me uncle because i keep saying I'm forgetful... I call him uncle because he call me uncle, and he is older ;p
Kit is uncle of SWM, SWM is uncle of Kit...Circular dependency... Process: Uncles 100% (CPU), 2GB (MEM Usage) Someone better kill take task...;)
Thanks Kit...SWM...I'm down on bended kness...Pls pls...So, now I can go :)?
I'm glad you like the feature. You have to also thank Prasanna for helping me out with the Regular Expressions. ;)
I have seen twice that a tortoise cross the road near my office. At about 6:30-7:00pm, when the sun is setting, the tortoise simply cross the road to look at the sun. The cars will be evading it. Oneday, my manager went down and took the tortoise to the lake near my office. (The deepest lake in my country is located beside my office.) When she release the tortoise into the lake, a giant monitor lizard came up and devour it. So, better let things happen naturally. :P
MSN Messenger is nice. I have ditch Trillian for quite sometime already. ;)
Stay calm buddy. Just uninstall it to ease your pain.
Its fun to be dramatic sometimes u know?
Mouse. Keyboard _and_ Mouse. Mouse-look is the most crucial implementation. Ever.
Hi, I got 2 errors running the application. 1. is some virus 2. not a valid win32 application how come?
I didn't have problems... What virus scanner are you using?
Well i have to disable my firewall and anti virus... but i still got an error everytime i put my own name or my friend email ... can you show some screenshot of ppl block you .. at least can see how it looks like :)
Oh ***... I'm not sure this can be considered a spyware, but its a msn spam ware. Shunjie was trying the app when I come online, I immediately get this message. Did they block you too? Download a free MSN Block Checker http://www.block-checker.com So, if you suspect someone blocked you, install it on a machine without msn... It will still work. At least for me... ha ha ha... Who still dare to block me!!!
Hmm wait a second.. u mean if a person block me in msn, he will receive the block checker url in his msn??? I don't quite understand with you earlier post ???
I can't believe it that you guys fell for the oldest trick in the book. *Sigh*
lol. Its not called the oldest trick for nothing. Sometimes the oldest trick just work coz you tot you will not fall for it, hehe. Now, someone tell me how to remove it..haha
No Wei Ching, Everyone in ur contact list will probably receive the message, not the blocker
Fd, its not a trick. It really works... I found out who blocked me...
Hey guys, i uninstall, but block checker is still running at the background. So conclusion is its a adware... Let me give you more description of the program. When you run the program, the UI allows you to key in the person you suspect is blocking you. Then it will show you if the person is online or not. If he is online, and in ur msn, he is not, you know he is blocking you lor... Install on a vpc if you want to find out who blocked u...
OooOOo seems my boss blocks me i guess.. haha! coz he received this message .. geez.. angry liau i also see my "friend" online in the software, but she is not.. geez ... this software makes me angry faster :(
I don't need Block Checker to know that.. every single one is blocking me! Especially that Kitkai.. he has some option to always show busy to me. :)
I might as well chip in. I block every single one in my MSN. There, I said it. Nothing to be ashamed about. So, this kind of software doesnt do anything for or against me :D
&nbsp; This is a follow-up from this story &nbsp; Whenever I need some encouragement, or when I'm...
Nice story, but the ending was a bit abrupt, hehe.. I don't like SAP... there may be money because of marketing, but there is no technical merrit.
Wow the website looks nice :)
Some ppl in sps newsgroup are awaiting Part 2 very much. Thanks Peter
Ah.... but i get "fed" from the _group_ RSS, not your individual feed. :-)
That's ok man... :)
I have to give the Sharepoint posts a miss, but for the rest I am following along as best I can. :) Now I just need to catch you when you are not busy on msn :/
"Feeling in the card..."? Sounds indecent. :-)
You are sharp! It's there to test you! Sorry lah... Jet lag..
You guys really know how to pamper yourself. For 2 years, I had no problems in getting onto a Grayline Express Coach to the hotels in Seattle :)
It's always good to know that the Office team is taking in useful features which otherwise causes normal users like me happier.
Wow.. congrats leh ..
Kit....Congrats..!!! U must webcast your wedding ceremony ;)
The following reserved device names cannot be used as the name of a file: CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9. You must avoid using these names as a file name suffix or file name body, so you have to avoid names such as aux.c, file.aux or NUL.txt. But I still dun understand why is CON reserved.
Weird, Bill should know better, seeing that he was more involved with DOS. And it should not be allowed, because "copy t.txt con" should display the text file, and "copy con t.txt" should copy console input to the text file.
"con" is reserved for the console input. http://blogs.msdn.com/adioltean/archive/2005/02/25/380759.aspx There was a famous bug in Windows 9x where you did something like "copy con con" (cannnot remember the exact command line) it will blue screen on you.
There has been significant improvement in your photo-taking skills; subject focus and clarity have gotten better, with a wider-range capture of the spectrum of colours. Well done.
'Wonderful'. Despite our constant complaints about jet-laggedness, we are afterall humans. We need _interaction_, and what better way than to meet and _handshake_. I'm for one who believes in human introduction over virtual introduction..;)
Formatting sounds like a good plan. I did not do that and I'm now struggling to get things working. Anyway, I guessed all the trouble is worth it. ;)
Oh yes... it is... Now it is running much faster, though I'm not used to the windows XP interface now...
Demostrating the power of community, after fellow council member, Microlau read my post that K2 workflow...
Take _warm_ care. Weather will be more brutal now x-)
Ya man... its as cold as up high in space needle now... I need to go get myself some gloves...
Howard says it snows there three times a year. *pause* Did you get that? As in, they get snow fall in a random of 3 days during winter.
All the more I'm very very very grateful that God allowed me to see snow... All the more I'm super happy to see snow... Nothing is coincidental, cos God is in control all the time...
thanks a lot. U have saved my work and time. -Siva
That's great! Finally, you can have the time to settle the 'outstanding' matters that you promised. :p
Finally can post my comments :) Xbox 360.. wow.. i want to play.. i heard the xbox 360 launching will be around march, 2006... wonder MIND can be involve with the launch in Singapore hmmm :P Is SgDotNet involved? I want to join, but my air flight is tomorrow ... sob sob why why.. i miss the KL one, also the penang and now singapore.. so unfair :( Happy Bday Microlau :) oops.. should I be posting or emailing him personally :)
Stress, still have to work on sunday morning for me this weekend! Haha. Enjoy your weekend =)
"Sacrifice" is too strong a word - as though people were _losing_ something valuable to attend an event with no worth.
:(... I need Hotmail ID... :(
I also want, how to get msn beta 8.0?
You always have the option of placing such people in the Ignore list.
Gosh.....Tat is true shocking...When I was studying, some IT students just standby at the printer to 'steal' other fella's codes for assignment submission...So, I guess that practice holds today...
huh, need hotmail account to use it?
Ya, we are warn against that 'trick' too. I guess there is still some 'hope'. Look at Darren, I think he surpass a lot of my peers regarding his knowledge on IT. Of course, on the overall, I think the standard is really gone.
Do you know _where_ went wrong? Your company's interview procedure. Does your company conduct drill and test interviewees for their technical competence? You'd be amazed by the number of filter who get filtered out this way.
You are right... But it is also because if you are technical, he gives you a chance to learn. Hence he doesn't really test your technical skills...
What is important in a technical review is not exactly what s/he _knows_ off hand, but also how s/he perceives the situation and make out of it, and find information to deal with it. We used to give interviewees a starting point to install MSDE for the .NET SDK - something any developer wanting to learn .NET is going to do. And I dunno if it's amusing or sad to see people clicking away aimlessly on the desktop in panic. Even when the instructions are right in front of them.
It's Windows Live Messenger (beta). Not MSN my dear buddy. ;)
Erm, i think we are heading for sensitive grounds, esp when i don't know who is reading this blog... I posted this for your amusements and the sad reality of our IT students...
And _why_ would it be considered sensitive? Because employers _don't_ like to know that their means of management is not perfect. http://icelava.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1153 It is way too easy to push the blame on the supposed incompetence of employees (that _you_ hired), to some extent which will be true, but very often one can identify ways from the management perspective to avoid such things.
VB is now called VB or Visual Basic, no more .NET :)
I think this event marks a brand new era of growth for Sg IT user group. So good to see such great stuff happening in sg. *Sob* Had to leave the event early because kenna mobilised, had to return back to army reserve camp.
Ok how Do I keep from having to go to each library to update the template?
Maybe they should make clients sign an "NDA" preventing copying of interior designs, else they forfeit a heavy fee.
Ha ha! I wish they understand what is NDA in the first place...
I am interested. thanks. I love your blog!
ok, this might help. djeanmcgregor@gmail.com
Hi Jean, just sent u an invite :)
link is not active from gmail. go ahead and send to dmaughan@deltadentalok.org. Thanks!
So you are essentially the same person that emailed me for an invite. I wish you had just let me know that you have problems instead of just asking me to send you another invite. The invite works in such a way that it allows you to sign in to the beta service using the email the invite is sent to. Since I have specifically asked you for your msn email, you have just wasted my second invite. Please do not ask for more. Thanks!
Hi , do you have any more invites left? If so can you pls send me an invite at leepoxian@hotmail.com? Thx a million in advance:D
Then _what_ MVP are you??? ;-)
One thing for sure: You cannot be a Word Spell-Check MVP as well ...
Ha ha! I was scratching my head just now... what do you guys mean... until Wen Ching msn me just now... then i realise... ;) Corrected it :)
Congrats......Cheers.... Ok, time to present on SPS (6)
Congratulations KitKai! You should have been a SPS MVP a long time ago. Keep up the work!
Congratulations on the transition!
Thank you :) especially to Howard and Lilian who made this possible!
Bye bye and enjoy yourself over there! Teriyaki all day is not really fun :( I cannot imagine how may frequent flyer miles you must be clocking during this period.
Don't you remember that was a Starbucks for just about every corner we turned? I'd would avoid it like the plague too if I were local. In fact, I _did_ avoid Starbucks while at Seattle. My friend wisely recommended we visit one of the private cosy homely joints.

Sent invites. Hi Tiffany, I'm not a msn user at all, until 8.0 provides me the ability to rename the nicknames. So I'm not in a good position to tell you what's new and great about it. Enjoy :)

What a wonderful way to ensure that the marketing guys (or gals) keeps their jobs?
> Very interesting and nicely done... Thank you. Yes, it is using SPS Search + a lot of customization. You will probably know the reason why a SPS 2003 Server is not so good facing the public with AD authentication ... ... which makes SPS 2006 very attractive doesnt it ? ;) - With the same membershipProvider model of .NET 2.0
Yeh, SharePoint 2007 rocks! I have implemented SharePoint 2003 internet facing before, requires lots of customisation, esp when registration is required. But the vendor that did this site didn't do it correctly...

Nice... that is quite a pro job. I did not believe an ID firm can produce such things.. haha... perhaps not the ID that I engaged for my place. Anyway, it is really cool.... remember to invite me for your house warming..... can't wait to sit on your black leather sofa and use your hotel style toilet... :)
Going for earthly tones? Nature?
ha ha... the black sofa is not mine... they just use it to show the layout...
Yup... more earthly, woody feel... Want to go home and rest, so all the lightings are all soft ones too...
Actually, no, you won't be seeing IIS7 Public Beta until Vista 64 Public Beta is out. Sorry, that's just true for now. Then again, I am answering a post of a year ago.
hey kitkai, looks awesome! do u like in springdale by any chance? the building looked like that from your window in one of the snaps:)
Very nice home :-)
I guess I will have access to sharepoint beta soon :)
Minimalist feel! I think is it great design!

I've made it as far as having a dll registered, and getting MODI to work via command line but I can't seem to get sharepoint to pass this along to the dll? Heck of a time with activex also, and can't seem to put it all together. Any news as I can't get a couple people to get on board using fax through server because they can't save comments on a document.
I like the tone of your designer, can I get the contact for the designer? And how much is your house renovated for? Approx?
Hi, his name is Byron. You can contact him at 96998818. Let him know Kit Kai recommended you
Thank you! You have given me much to ponder. I also must answer no to each of your questions. I am not growing closer to my Lord Jesus. I instead have been slowly withering and dying. Its been said "whatever is not growing is dying" and its true. There is no middle growned. We must fill ourselved daying with the things of God (life). if not, we will be filled daily with something else, something not of God. (Death) You have awaked me Lord. I must feel my mind, my heart, and my days with You. Your living Word. You are a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. ***Today is a new day, thank you for your Blog
Hi Steve, Are you using sharepoint as well?
I can have one msn 8.0 inviter? Thanks very much jialiexp@gmail.com
Can i have one msn8.0 invitation? Thanks very much jialiexp@gmail.com
Yes I'm using WSS, I don't know why Microsoft seemed to have left this out of the office and sharepoint integration. I just can't get the activex part to pass along to a dll to open the file in modi with reference to where the file was in sharepoint. But it sounds like you've completed that part, and I was wondering how or if you would be willing to share the way or files you created.
Hmmm... interesting. But then again there are so many blogs out there, it can't be compatible with everything I guess. The blog that I use - Blurty, has a tool to download a client onto your PC so that you need not update on the browser. Nonetheless, it has many restrictions, you can't write chinese, can't do special characters and many others. Hope that Office 2007 can settle all these issues... I guess we human are never satisfied aren't we?
Hello Sophia! Are you the Sophia I know? Word is going to support metaweblog api and atom api... i think (cross fingers) most blogs is supporting those api... So hopefully Word is going to help you! Can't wait for beta 2 to come out now...
Hi Kitkai, your renovation looks good. I'm also in the process of sourcing for contractor / ID. More like i need contractor cos we know what we want. I have contacted Byron already (told him u recommended...:p) If possible, could ya kindly fwd me the cost of your reno? ThkQ -joe
Yap yap! It's me! Sophia from HP! Unless if there are other Sophias that you know from HP... lol! It seems like Office 2007 is quite the upgrade! I'm looking forward to it too!
have you got any left, if so can you send me one please jon182@gmil.com
Hello, Is there any more invites left? If you do can you send me one at Deananator_alex@hotmail.com
Any chance we will see your solution, I know the Sharepoint 3 beta is out now, not sure if this would fix the issue, but I'm trying to do this on SBS 2003.

Alternatively, if your readers are interested in an uncomplicated, client only (no server install required) rich client to take SharePoint sites offline, I suggest they consider Colligo for SharePoint (www.colligo.com). Further details on the product can be found below. Colligo Reader is a free product enabling users to download SharePoint sites to their local machine for use when offline and disconnected from the Internet. The Reader can be found on our website at: http://www.colligo.com/products/sharepoint/reader.asp. Colligo Contributor with its two-way synchronization and conflict resolution capabilities is ideal for SharePoint sites designed as collaborative workspaces through portals on the internet or corporate intranet. Both Colligo Reader and Colligo Contributor are super easy to deploy and use, and support all of the SharePoint features commonly used by site architects for portal and workspace implementations. These client only applications are very lightweight (Contributor is only 4.5MB) and requires little to no training.
Thanks for the reference Kit! :o)

Hi, I've been following your blog. It has been very interesting. You are really active and must have spent a great amount of your time (apparent to everyone) in keeping this blog space updated with such rich content.
It looks like a very eventful year for you. I see that your employer had sent you overseas early this year. Then came your new house, and your wedding. Last came your new job. It's a totally NEW year for you.
But what saddens me is the remark you made of your employer - "The most important thing I've learn is, it doesn't pay AT ALL to help local bosses finish up the mountain of work, sacrificing personal time.". You claimed that it is the most important thing that you've learnt, but I felt otherwise.
This remark kind of revealed a few "ugly" sides of you.
1. On your attitude towards to work. You treat your work as "helping" your boss. Weren't you paid to do the work in the 1st place? Weren't you hired to do the work?
2. On your attitude towards your employer. I find that you are being "ungrateful". I actually envy you having time to be active in blog, house reno, community meetup, participate MVP activities, and church. After being so busy with so many activities, I wonder how much time and energy you have left for work. Yet, you are still complaining about your employer.
It has become more apparent to me that you are the type of people that is always asking what can the organisation give and do for me, and not what can you contribute to the organisation.
Truthfully, I am very sicken by your remark, and am utterly disappointed with you. The respect I have for you as an active MVP has just gone down the drain.
I don't know if I want to wish you "all the best", because I would be a hypocrite if I do so. But with you having this kind of attitude in life, you will really need the blessing.
Hmm, thank you Mr "ex-believer in you". To reply in accordance,1) I didn't elaborate on the entire situation in my office before, which have undergo a 180 degree turn from the day I have started work. But I am also not comfortable in revealing what has happened to make me say that remark.2) While I've lost your respect and thank you for being candid to leave a comment on my blog, I find your comment very judgemental especially when you do not have the entire picture. And I'm not going to explain myself because you will only have my side of the story to hear, and not have the option to verify the story from the other party. 3) Lastly, I'm not perfect. Humans have flaws and I'm simply a disgrunted and unappreciated ex-employee, and I'm not the only one.

Personally, I vouch for Kit Kai's character. He's well known for his passion and candidness. Candidness is certainly a double-edged sword which either people love his comments or hate it. Mr "Ex-KitKai" fan, I'll give him double my blessings. I have my personal take on a few of your comments:
1. Weren't you paid to do the work in the 1st place? Weren't you hired to do the work?
w/o doubt, but I can vouch that he's working his "backside" off for his previous employer.
2. On your attitude towards your employer.
I will be unimpressed, if I didn't know him. There's no doubt about his attitude towards his work, community activites, life and family.
I really don't know you very well from just your blog. I'm not speaking up for your employer, nor am I saying that you are wrong to have just learnt that lesson of "The most important thing I've learn is, it doesn't pay AT ALL to help local bosses finish up the mountain of work, sacrificing personal time." I guess it's just my expectation of a professional personnel. Something that is also puzzles me is the amount of time that you have. With so many committments, how can you possibly have time to work your "backside" off for your previous employer. Maybe you should sit down and think hard on this issue. Could it be that you probably worked your "backside" off on your reno, wedding and MVP activities, and thus your work seems like to be a huge load on you? Well, I'm not here to say who is right and who is wrong. But I really sympathize with you if that was your "most important thing learnt".
Obviously I do learn other things as well. BUT I feel that was the most important thing because the price I pay to learn that lesson now is not as costly as if I learn the same lesson when I have kids.
I won't respond to your comments, as without full details, I feel you are just being judgemental. Furthermore, you are not leaving any contact details...
Glad you liked my out-of-office email reply.

Alot of things Microsoft delivers is not new; yes in fact almost everything is really "catch up" ;-)
Even though Microsoft products are _not_ perfect and many still carry great deal of complexity and odd interface designs, there is nonetheless an appreciable level of effort to make things easier to work with for the human user. Thus a noticeable result in more palatable product use versus that of other vendors. Safe for Apple, of course.
You didn't put up a few embarrassing questions for them, did you?
Word's thesaurus was an invaluable tool at my disposal during the days of my youth. Use it and you will do well.
I prefer going google and typing define: There are many words which Word's thesaurus do not provide an alternative. ;) e.g. deictic oops
Wow, thats a pretty cool feature. Good for learning languages!
Maybe you should get encarta... I know that feature can integrate with encarta and help you look up for meanings of words, and of course thesaurus too...
Yes, in today's always-connected world, Google and thesarus.com and other Internet resources are a whole lot faster than Word.
But if you are already using Word direct to author a document, Shift-F7 as a first step ain't too shabby.
from your company's tech support? or from MS tech support?
Obviously it is my company's helpdesk.
Its ok to fumble and look silly on the stage, just don't take it too hard on yourself. It's really the experience that counts. No one is a born speaker, and speaking in front of a panel of technical people who might know better doesn't make things easier!
I guess as long as you have the heart to push yourself beyond your comfort zone you'll get somewhere sometime. I've been wanting to speak for a while but have never really got into doing it. Just push on!
I wasn't there for your presentation but from speaking from a non-speaker perspective, it's heartening to see people making the move to push themselves further.

Hey Kit, don't be demoralised by this. As the saying goes, 'Practice makes perfect'. If you don't make it the first time, keep on trying and I am sure you will feel more confident in your next round. Important thing is you try and not give up.
Dun worry, I will try again, and again, and again... I'm going to get myself ready for teched US next year! :p
Oh... haha.. i guess probably, you'd know more of vista then them.. lol..
rtm vista needs to be activated also....i guess the msdn version doesnt need to be activated.
In vista, all versions need activation, whether you are msdn, retail, or volume licensing...

I have Jmicron enabled as IDE use only. I can install Vista 64 on the ASUS P5W DH, and boot from that drive, SATA or IDE. However, after some short time, following game playing for whatever reason, the PC will not re-boot with the JMicron port enabled! Since I have SATA, I can boot from them. Using boot from last good configuration does not work. If I ghost over a good copy of the Vista 64 drive, I'm good for a bit, until I play a game on Vista. Then the re-boot won't go and I start the process all over again. My workaround was to disable to JMicron in bios.
I just wrote to ASUS, lets see how they respond...
Just a shot in the dark (not being a Windows user myself), but have you tried updating your P5B BIOS? It comes bundled with an updated JMB363 BIOS which may play more nicely with Vista (it resolves issues with the GRUB bootloader).
Updating the BIOS with the built-in Asus EZ-Flash2 utility is amazing - Drop the .ROM file onto a flash drive, plug that in, reboot and tap Alt-F2. Select the file, and away it goes.
One last shot in the dark: Have you tried booting into an existing Windows (XP, perhaps?) installation and installing Vista from there? I believe that will let you copy all the bits to the disk, and then simply reboot into the installation, no boot-time installation or DVD drive needed.
I've updated the bios as well. Before the update, vista will start copying the files, overriding the os in the process, and give you a read error...
Sad to say, I'm never comfortable with upgrading OS. I rather format and start clean...
I believe you *can* do a fresh install from within XP by pointing it at an empty partition. No upgrade mess.
It's official that the problem has something to do with jmicron. So any kind of install won't fix the problem until updated drivers are released.
I have exactly the same issue, although I was able to install Vista x64 just fine. When I tried to roll to 32-bit though (because I need to install some stuff that doesn't have WHQL signed drivers), I hit the exact same issue. It can boot from the DVD drive just fine (NEC I think), but then can't get past the "Install Now" page. It keeps prompting for a valid driver for the CD/DVD drive. You say the problem has something to do with jmicron. Have you logged a service request with them, and/or Asus? Lemme know where you complained, because I'll go do it too. Neil
There is a start to everything and I believe that its a good start... I also believe that you did well and its not an easy task execute but you did well. MORE TO COME!!
After getting the providers configured, and enabling anonymous access, SgDotNet was able to serve authenticated
Crikey! you reminded me i haven't posted about that topic!

It is not just Vista/IE7; this has been around since WinXP SP2.
I never had that problem in XP2 leh...
I have a personal T42 laptop that I love very much, and I used it for almost everything, even for work
Could you provide some more details please? What exactly happened? This sounds very unusual.
Dude...better catch some rest..You're overworked and under-rested.
Can't seem to get this to work on Vista 64. I assume this is in regards to File Sharing not working on 64 bit OS with Groove. That sucks!!
I haven't try it on 64-bit yet... Will try soon and let you know...

Let's say, all i know is only BizTalk Server, and so happen they need someone with BTS knowledge. :D We still need a Sharepoint MVP for the portal, competent manager, Microsoft guy for insider access, SAP savvy client, and of course, supporting colleagues, to complete the whole picture. It was a dream team!
WOW, you can be amazed the gap between the level of competency they declared and what they actually have...
Don't u think u are thinking too highly of yourself here ? Wat u describe is a common problem all over the IT industry. b4 u made sweeping statements like those, u shld really ask ur company if they have made that kind of statements before to others and have others also amazed 'sacarstically' at the level of competence of ur company. chances are high that they did. This is common in pre-sales.
I am from enduser so I know the tricks vendors and companies play to get a deal. b4 you shake your head at others backyard, mow your own lawn first.

I was working on a POC for a client that wanted to implement SOA for his company. Microsoft sold them
HI,
Great post, nice one!
an important question:
I am using an offline solution to fill out InfoPath forms and then sync them back to SharePoint.
How can I consume web services while offline ?
For example - build a local web service provider to sync with the original content web service and save an offline copy ??
I will appreciate an idea, perhaps I can convince the providers of my offline solution to also sync web service contents ??
Thanks
George.
Hi,
Well, made some investigations… if you have metadata offline, then all that is required is some local IIS and some logic to create an offline web service with your own client PC…
This might just be a nice solution…
For SharePoint offline solution i am using ShareGO by kwizcom -

I will contact the kwizcom and update this forum about the results..

One other thing the industry always failed to ack is the creation of the multi-vendor SCA (Service-Component Architecture). While it remains to be seen (and proven), the reason for this is to address the single-digit market share of SUN's App Servers, Marketshare as well as shareprice. This is no known secret. Also being removed is SUN's JCP process.
Will this work ? Time will tell.
Also - it really all depends on what YOU think SOA is all about. If you are one of those who believe that it is a product enabler, you will find the presentation from companies who sell SOA products interesting with good alignment from products. If you believe that it is a style of architecture, from good practices, good org committment and buyin, then it really doesnt matter what products you use, does it ? Indepedent consultants should be able to go into these presentations with their own views instead of letting the vendors convince you otherwise. Thats why there will always be n camps and free-will ;)
If a vendor comes in a sell to a customer "That I have this super technology server that can monitor your processes, handle exception and change management" but the customer doesnt know how they would use all these. Wouldnt that be a white elephant ?
I think that is the biggest problem today we have in SOA - What are the concrete deliverables and how do we measure it ?
This is just a ranting....I sign up with M1 broadband, mainly because of the unreliability of Wireless
You will hardly find objective evaluation in the industry, people's view are biased because of economical incentive, intentionally or unintentionally. This is particularly true for technical sales.
Popularity is hardly an attribute of technical merit. The same goes for market share, share price, love or loath of particular technolgy or buzz words.
It's the compatability that wins hand down, taking language, important element of software world, some people prefer being closer to machine, they use c++ while some people prefer the ease and large availability of high level libraries, they use .NET; some people prefer the RAD of scripting, they use Ruby/Python; some people do not worry about the sometimes chaos of Java world and get things rolled out; some people prefer a very well-defined framework and feels the sense of security while others feel the constraints associated and the list goes on. Compatability determines the happiness when you work with, lanaguage or technolgoy, on a particular technolgy. If that thing makes you feel relief from incompatability, feel happier, feel more achievement, discover more truth each day you use it, then keep going ahead.
The above is from individual's perspective, turning around from the company's perspecitve, if you keep people happy doing each own's work, of course this is a two-way process, not to be inflicted with incompatible agendas, the project undertaken is bound to be done quicker and neater, and eventually please the customer too.

Don't quite understand what you mean...
No, I don't believe SOA is a product enabler. I believe it is a style of architecture. But unless the company is going to build everything by itself, they would be looking at vendors to help them... But what does MS has to help their customers? Besides ESB, the rest of the piece is still not there...
Only MS sells technology to the customer, and it depends on individual tech sales ppl to craft how the story how it may help in the organisation. But in this training, the vendor teaches its sales and partner exactly which area to probe, what exactly to probe, which product to put in, which functionality to address certain pains, who your competitor is going to be, and how to counter them. It is never about product feature...
What are the concrete deliverables, how to measure it, the vendor already has all these thought out carefully...
I'm not bothered by which language is popular... I'm just amused at how inaccurate their information can be, and how self-denial they can be as well... Just today, they say Vista is their competitor to their web services registry kind of product... Of all the products Microsoft has, they choose a client operating system... Duh!!!

After my 6th ICT, quite sad to say that my commanders don&#39;t seem to understand this.. From the top
Commanders are still human, they do make errors. Sometimes. doesn't mean what they say we follow blindly. How many commanders in Singapore have go thro' an actual war experience, may I asked?
1. If you treat your men bad, how they going to fight for you on the battlefield when their welfare are compromised?
2. They often view results more important than the welfare of the men. Sometimes, they think what they do should be non-discussable , not open to suggestions. If we sit down and discuss sometimes, we may have a better solution that saves time and effort.
So thats why I didnt see you at yesterday's UG meet...
Sidyk,
Yup, but I could actually make it if I asked my officer for early release, since it's stayout night (the first in 6 ICT!!!) but I dread the thought of him not giving me, or giving me a really impossible time to reach on time.
Daren,
I agree that commanders are still human. but after 6 ICTs, and some of the officers are going through management courses, I can only sigh. A few of us even joked about rejecting the employment offer if we realise that one of our officers might be our boss!
I don't agree about needing actual war experience to know how to lead and manage our men. In fact, I would be more forgiving if the officer is a regular, (and some regulars, like my RSM, is even more understanding with the fact that we are or NS-Men). In fact, I think that the facts that these officers have a civilian job, and those jobs would have teach them how to manage people better. I mean which manager won't face resource issue at any point in his career? Managers in my company is constantly handling this...

Very creative indeed... But I wonder if you would buy triple core after knowing this...http://blogs.zdnet
of course you would, if the price is right. your CPUs are made in the same way...if they fail the tests at higher clock speeds but pass the tests at lower speeds, they're sold as lower clocked CPUs. that is why the higher speed CPUs are more expensive than the lower clocked CPUs, because fewer manufactured CPUs pass the high speed tests. would you only buy the top-speed CPUs? of course not.
it's all about YIELD and minimizing waste ;)
Oh, I didn't know that...
I though because one core fails the test, after some usage, the rest of the core might fail too...
i'm sure Intel will do the same (and actually does the same) with their CPUs. you'd notice that some Intel CPUs have same clock speed but different cache sizes. I reckon that some of them may have part of their cache memory defective, so the defective sections are disabled and they are marked as CPUs with lower L2 cache capacity.
same concept applies to the manufacture of hard disks today and floppy disks in an earlier era :P

Hi there. I've subscribed to your blog for a while, and it's always provided good information about Sharepoint. So, first of all, thanks for the willingness to share what you know. I really appreciate it. I've run across a problem with the new version that we had nailed down in 2003 thanks to your blog (http://community.sgdotnet.org/blogs/kitkai/archive/2005/10/11/21957.aspx). The solution doesn't seem to work in 2007 -- the AclVer.aspx file isn't around any more, and grepping through the 12 hive doesn't show where the variable (strMailSubject) is, nor any of the wording in the message. Drop me a note to (jporter) (at) (regis.edu) and let me know if you have any idea what's going on here; we're all at a loss. I tried emailing you through your form, but got a bounce message.
I found the drivers from creative too... But you will be surprised, those drivers doesn't install in Windows 2k3
hi kitkai, if there is an exe in the drivers? maybe u can try running in winxp compatibility mode. Right-click the exe and click the compatibility and select winxp. I just learn this trick within this week to make an application which was not supported in win 2003 to run!

Hyper-V is used to expand the capacity of the virtual harddisk. The partition still depends on the OS...

Thanks for these posts regarding Hyper-V Beta. I too experienced the BSOD trying to upgrade the VM additions. Not so, as you describe. Thanks again for the late breaking info. ~tb

We did set up an email scenario for one of our clients. They would email documents that were scanned directly to a document library. We didn't do much more than a POC so we didn't get into issues about the meta data. HTH, --Paul Galvin
We have a large imaging repository project that is leveraging MOSS as the storage repository. We will be using the incoming email feature for Doc Libs to insert the images into MOSS.
Don't really use it. It is setup but I think either the users are not aware of its availablity or are just used to the old-fashioned way. Users are used to emailing docs to their team so you would think that emailing the library would be natural. I think communication of the feature and getting a few people to at least CC the library when sending a doc might increase adoption. But, development is my only area. ;-)
Email address of each document library depends on the incoming email settings you have configured in

I agree completely with the authors statements. I just ordered a new hard drive my my XPS M1710 to do exactly that.
At the very least Microsoft should allow us to use sleep mode after we manually (or by script) stopped the 3 Hyper-V services on the host machine! I run Windows 2008 Server Enterprise on my notebook to develop for sharepoint and windows media services. It is a shame that Microsofts thinks 1.5 million MSDN subscribers and software developers are not wothy enough to put a little bit of manpower and money behind something that would keep them from switching to VMware!
Well, so far, only two mvps has be vocal about this, plus two readers of this blog out of 486 readers who subscribed (according to feedburner). That does look like minority. I'm losing the fight to get my sleep back...

I am also a Windows Server MVP and I urge Microsoft support for your initiative. I was planning to replace Vista on my notebook with Windows Server 2008--because of the tighter GUI response in Server 08, and to run 64-bit VMs for labing stuff on the road. However, if I lose all sleep mode capability on the notebook, I will not proceed with that plan, I will not be able to use Windows Server 2008 on my notebook, and I will remain without a way to model 64-bit server and client solutions for my customers and Microsoft on my notebook. Retaining sleep capability is mandatory on my notebook.

That's one bizarre clock...
It is a clepsydra :)
That's a water clock :) There's one (claimed to be the largest in North America) at the entrance to the Indianapolis Children's Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Looks like a thermometer and barometer. I'm guessing the neon is non-functional. The blue liquid responds to pressure and temperature and the volume on the right reflects temp. I guess the left reports pressure or something.
A thermometer or barometer?

Great summary on the social networking. However, there are more to social networking than getting people connected. Here, you're focusing on the technology aspect. On being connected. It's not a wrong view. Yet, if we take one step back, there is the other side of the social networking, that it, building the network itself. Or the culture. This involves giving and taking. Sharing. Being in the same context and same page. That is when social network will nourish, rather than expand. And this is no small feat. It doesn't happen in a snap. With this in mind, it is no wonder that managements still doubt the benefits of social networking in office environment it will bring, not to mention the unproductivity, especially in Singapore, when internet connection privilege is much being "abused" by high number of super-powered attacks on friends on facebook, or browsing friends' photos in friendster (and later claim to the supervisor for being overworked).
And yes, if the company manage to set a proper performance KPI, it will be ideal to see whether having social networking application will help or break an individual. However, performance KPI is often subjective, and it is difficult to relate directly between the hours used on social networking sites in regards to x% of job performance (in management term, it is just a proxy measure).
Project has finally been released to public, with source code for you to build the project. There isn&#39;t
But in a corporate social network, it would be without those games, means no power attacks...
If the performance KPI is not set properly, I don't think the organisation will be able to retain talented people... I'm quite sure you will leave if the one beside you get promoted for poking people...
Hi. What is the difficult level of modifying your code to simpily allow the "expire date" field to be populated from an email? I would like SharePoint list announcments to be emailed to SharePoint but only the body is added to the list... requirement to add expire date is what I would like to address. Any information would be great! Thanks
The beauty of this is it retrieves the fields of the content type the user has selected. So your expire date will appear in one of the fields in the email template...

i personally practise TDD, and to me it's a very effective way of designing code that's "malleable."
it took some time for me to "get" it though. it is quite a challenge to get a whole team to adopt TDD from scratch. there will definitely be some in the team that will "regress" to their old ways because of this.
TDD is just one of the aspects of XP. is XP for you? it depends...it's a radical shift in project management thinking. you have to identify what practices you can implement and if your clients will agree to adopt them as well (if you do XP but your clients prefer waterfall, that's a recipe for disaster). then from there you can decide if XP is for you.
anyhow, i think the biggest benefit would be to adopt TDD (assuming you have senior guys in your team who are experienced in TDD, to help the junior guys) and an iterative process of development, instead of a big design upfront/big bang output that's typical of waterfall.
my 2 cents...
oh, and you don't need to rig a green or red lava lamp for your team. you just have to make use of cruisecontrol.NET and the CCTray utility, which will show a green or red circle in your system tray depending on the build status. :)
Ha ha... obviously visual indicator is not my focus... just that it made its mark in my memory...
Hi kitkai, I can't say that i'm already a TDD practitioner my self, but for the last couple of months, i'm trying to learn and apply it to my current work. Here are my 2 cents ;) 1. it's hard to "get" TDD concept (agree with cruizer), I find that it depends on the our own mindset, the more comfortable we are in our current non-TDD way of thinking, it gets tougher to change into TDD, because it really seems like an extra effort to create the tests initially. 2. all the companies that i have worked for, they are used to the Microsoft project style planning (waterfall) where usually all the work items with the schedule need to be defined upfront before we kick start the project. I'm really curious actually how many companies in Singapore have applied non-waterfall methodology such as agile, scrum, etc. 3. design first or test first? for example, I like the design specification to be clear and in detail before we start the development, but with TDD, we create tests then the code and do lots of refactoring. how much deep in details should we put in the design specification with TDD now? 4. the test boundaries, what kind of things should we test? i found that the book below is a good reference to start with : Pragmatic Unit Testing in C# with NUnit, 2nd Ed., 2nd Edition by Andy Hunt and Dave Thomas with Matt Hargett 5. TDD is a broad topic, it involves lot of things such as mocking, automated testing, automated build, continous integration. how i feel about TDD, i'm a believer and a follower ;) but I would think that TDD is just a good way to follow, but it's not the silver bullet for all cases, it's the good communication that really helps in a project.
best way to start TDD is to ignore the "T" == tests. it's about design, not testing. perhaps the BDD (behaviour driven development) captures the idea better, since the tests are not about testing for correctness (though that is a side effect or artifact of the process) but for specifying the correct/intended behaviour of the code being created.
would both of you like to give a practical presentation on tdd?
sure just let me know when :) i've presented multiple times on TDD back in the Philippines, for both the .NET user group and the PHP user group...
