# re: From the Earth to the Moon@ Thursday, May 19, 2005 12:13 PM

The more I watch, it seems there are politics at the management level, where which design of the spacecraft to use. When the decision has to be made on who steps on the moon first, also shows politics. But the nice thing is, these politics goes away, when every focuses on the mission at hand. You can tell that when Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon, the other guy (forgot the name) was sooooo sad... But they all make decisions for the good of the mission, and that is where politics dissolve.
Many project don't even bother to do envisioning (In the first place, do they know...) But the video really shows the power of envisioning...

Oneday, my manager went down and took the tortoise to the lake near my office. (The deepest lake in my country is located beside my office.) When she release the tortoise into the lake, a giant monitor lizard came up and devour it.

So, better let things happen naturally. :P

# re: Interesting Discovery, a new reserved word@ Friday, October 14, 2005 3:31 PM

The following reserved device names cannot be used as the name of a file:

CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9.

You must avoid using these names as a file name suffix or file name body, so you have to avoid names such as aux.c, file.aux or NUL.txt.

But I still dun understand why is CON reserved.

by eforce

# re: Interesting Discovery, a new reserved word@ Friday, October 14, 2005 6:24 PM

Weird, Bill should know better, seeing that he was more involved with DOS.

And it should not be allowed, because "copy t.txt con" should display the text file, and "copy con t.txt" should copy console input to the text file.

by hannes

# re: Interesting Discovery, a new reserved word@ Saturday, October 15, 2005 10:10 AM

"con" is reserved for the console input.

by Shunjie

# re: Singapore IT Students@ Friday, December 23, 2005 8:48 AM

Do you know _where_ went wrong? Your company's interview procedure.

Does your company conduct drill and test interviewees for their technical competence? You'd be amazed by the number of filter who get filtered out this way.

by icelava

# re: Singapore IT Students@ Friday, December 23, 2005 9:15 AM

You are right... But it is also because if you are technical, he gives you a chance to learn. Hence he doesn't really test your technical skills...

by kitkai

# re: Singapore IT Students@ Friday, December 23, 2005 8:13 PM

What is important in a technical review is not exactly what s/he _knows_ off hand, but also how s/he perceives the situation and make out of it, and find information to deal with it.

We used to give interviewees a starting point to install MSDE for the .NET SDK - something any developer wanting to learn .NET is going to do. And I dunno if it's amusing or sad to see people clicking away aimlessly on the desktop in panic. Even when the instructions are right in front of them.

by icelava

# re: Singapore IT Students@ Friday, December 23, 2005 10:53 PM

Erm, i think we are heading for sensitive grounds, esp when i don't know who is reading this blog...
I posted this for your amusements and the sad reality of our IT students...

by kitkai

# re: Singapore IT Students@ Sunday, December 25, 2005 1:57 AM

And _why_ would it be considered sensitive?

Because employers _don't_ like to know that their means of management is not perfect.

http://icelava.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1153

It is way too easy to push the blame on the supposed incompetence of employees (that _you_ hired), to some extent which will be true, but very often one can identify ways from the management perspective to avoid such things.

I've made it as far as having a dll registered, and getting MODI to work via command line but I can't seem to get sharepoint to pass this along to the dll?  Heck of a time with activex also, and can't seem to put it all together.  Any news as I can't get a couple people to get on board using fax through server because they can't save comments on a document.

Its been said "whatever is not growing is dying"  and its true.  There is no middle growned. We must fill ourselved daying with the things of God (life).  if not, we will be filled daily with something else, something not of God. (Death)

You have awaked me Lord.  I must feel my mind, my heart, and my days with You.  Your living Word.  You are a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

Yes I'm using WSS, I don't know why Microsoft seemed to have left this out of the office and sharepoint integration.  I just can't get the activex part to pass along to a dll to open the file in modi with reference to where the file was in sharepoint.  But it sounds like you've completed that part, and I was wondering how or if you would be willing to share the way or files you created.

# re: Offline Sharepoint??!!@ Wednesday, August 02, 2006 8:42 AM

Alternatively, if your readers are interested in an uncomplicated, client only (no server install required) rich client to take SharePoint sites offline, I suggest they consider Colligo for SharePoint (www.colligo.com). Further details on the product can be found below. Colligo Reader is a free product enabling users to download SharePoint sites to their local machine for use when offline and disconnected from the Internet. The Reader can be found on our website at: http://www.colligo.com/products/sharepoint/reader.asp. Colligo Contributor with its two-way synchronization and conflict resolution capabilities is ideal for SharePoint sites designed as collaborative workspaces through portals on the internet or corporate intranet. Both Colligo Reader and Colligo Contributor are super easy to deploy and use, and support all of the SharePoint features commonly used by site architects for portal and workspace implementations. These client only applications are very lightweight (Contributor is only 4.5MB) and requires little to no training.

# re: Finally had some time to sit in front of my laptop...@ Thursday, October 12, 2006 8:35 AM

Hi, I've been following your blog.  It has been very interesting.  You are really active and must have spent a great amount of your time (apparent to everyone) in keeping this blog space updated with such rich content.

It looks like a very eventful year for you.  I see that your employer had sent you overseas early this year.  Then came your new house, and your wedding.  Last came your new job.  It's a totally NEW year for you.

But what saddens me is the remark you made of your employer - "The most important thing I've learn is, it doesn't pay AT ALL to help local bosses finish up the mountain of work, sacrificing personal time.".  You claimed that it is the most important thing that you've learnt, but I felt otherwise.

This remark kind of revealed a few "ugly" sides of you.

1.  On your attitude towards to work.  You treat your work as "helping" your boss.  Weren't you paid to do the work in the 1st place?  Weren't you hired to do the work?

2.  On your attitude towards your employer.  I find that you are being "ungrateful".  I actually envy you having time to be active in blog, house reno, community meetup, participate MVP activities, and church.  After being so busy with so many activities, I wonder how much time and energy you have left for work.  Yet, you are still complaining about your employer.

It has become more apparent to me that you are the type of people that is always asking what can the organisation give and do for me, and not what can you contribute to the organisation.

Truthfully, I am very sicken by your remark, and am utterly disappointed with you.  The respect I have for you as an active MVP has just gone down the drain.

I don't know if I want to wish you "all the best", because I would be a hypocrite if I do so.  But with you having this kind of attitude in life, you will really need the blessing.

by An Ex-Believer in You.

# re: Finally had some time to sit in front of my laptop...@ Thursday, October 12, 2006 11:26 AM

Hmm,

thank you Mr "ex-believer in you". To reply in accordance,

1) I didn't elaborate on the entire situation in my office before, which have undergo a 180 degree turn from the day I have started work. But I am also not comfortable in revealing what has happened to make me say that remark.

2) While I've lost your respect and thank you for being candid to leave a comment on my blog, I find your comment very judgemental especially when you do not have the entire picture. And I'm not going to explain myself because you will only have my side of the story to hear, and not have the option to verify the story from the other party.

3) Lastly, I'm not perfect. Humans have flaws and I'm simply a disgrunted and unappreciated ex-employee, and I'm not the only one.

# re: Finally had some time to sit in front of my laptop...@ Thursday, October 12, 2006 11:51 AM

Personally, I vouch for Kit Kai's character. He's well known for his passion and candidness. Candidness is certainly a double-edged sword which either people love his comments or hate it. Mr "Ex-KitKai" fan, I'll give him double my blessings. I have my personal take on a few of your comments:

1. Weren't you paid to do the work in the 1st place?  Weren't you hired to do the work?

w/o doubt, but I can vouch that he's working his "backside" off for his previous employer.

2. On your attitude towards your employer.

I will be unimpressed, if I didn't know him. There's no doubt about his attitude towards his work, community activites, life and family.

# re: Finally had some time to sit in front of my laptop...@ Thursday, October 12, 2006 6:48 PM

I really don't know you very well from just your blog. I'm not speaking up for your employer, nor am I saying that you are wrong to have just learnt that lesson of "The most important thing I've learn is, it doesn't pay AT ALL to help local bosses finish up the mountain of work, sacrificing personal time." I guess it's just my expectation of a professional personnel. Something that is also puzzles me is the amount of time that you have. With so many committments, how can you possibly have time to work your "backside" off for your previous employer. Maybe you should sit down and think hard on this issue. Could it be that you probably worked your "backside" off on your reno, wedding and MVP activities, and thus your work seems like to be a huge load on you? Well, I'm not here to say who is right and who is wrong. But I really sympathize with you if that was your "most important thing learnt".

by Ex-Believer

# re: Finally had some time to sit in front of my laptop...@ Thursday, October 12, 2006 11:13 PM

Obviously I do learn other things as well. BUT I feel that was the most important thing because the price I pay to learn that lesson now is not as costly as if I learn the same lesson when I have kids.

I won't respond to your comments, as without full details, I feel you are just being judgemental. Furthermore, you are not leaving any contact details...

Alot of things Microsoft delivers is not new; yes in fact almost everything is really "catch up" ;-)

Even though Microsoft products are _not_ perfect and many still carry great deal of complexity and odd interface designs, there is nonetheless an appreciable level of effort to make things easier to work with for the human user. Thus a noticeable result in more palatable product use versus that of other vendors. Safe for Apple, of course.

Its ok to fumble and look silly on the stage, just don't take it too hard on yourself. It's really the experience that counts. No one is a born speaker, and speaking in front of a panel of technical people who might know better doesn't make things easier!

I guess as long as you have the heart to push yourself beyond your comfort zone you'll get somewhere sometime. I've been wanting to speak for a while but have never really got into doing it. Just push on!

I wasn't there for your presentation but from speaking from a non-speaker perspective, it's heartening to see people making the move to push themselves further.

# re: Getting really fustrated with Asus P5B / JMicron / Vista x64...@ Thursday, December 14, 2006 3:49 AM

I have Jmicron enabled as IDE use only. I can install Vista 64 on the ASUS P5W DH, and boot from that drive, SATA or IDE. However, after some short time, following game playing for whatever reason, the PC will not re-boot with the JMicron port enabled! Since I have SATA, I can boot from them. Using boot from last good configuration does not work. If I ghost over a good copy of the Vista 64 drive, I'm good for a bit, until I play a game on Vista. Then the re-boot won't go and I start the process all over again. My workaround was to disable to JMicron in bios.

Just a shot in the dark (not being a Windows user myself), but have you tried updating your P5B BIOS? It comes bundled with an updated JMB363 BIOS which may play more nicely with Vista (it resolves issues with the GRUB bootloader).

Updating the BIOS with the built-in Asus EZ-Flash2 utility is amazing - Drop the .ROM file onto a flash drive, plug that in, reboot and tap Alt-F2. Select the file, and away it goes.

One last shot in the dark: Have you tried booting into an existing Windows (XP, perhaps?) installation and installing Vista from there? I believe that will let you copy all the bits to the disk, and then simply reboot into the installation, no boot-time installation or DVD drive needed.

# re: Getting really fustrated with Asus P5B / JMicron / Vista x64...@ Friday, December 15, 2006 3:35 PM

I've updated the bios as well. Before the update, vista will start copying the files, overriding the os in the process, and give you a read error...

Sad to say, I'm never comfortable with upgrading OS. I rather format and start clean...

I have exactly the same issue, although I was able to install Vista x64 just fine. When I tried to roll to 32-bit though (because I need to install some stuff that doesn't have WHQL signed drivers), I hit the exact same issue. It can boot from the DVD drive just fine (NEC I think), but then can't get past the "Install Now" page. It keeps prompting for a valid driver for the CD/DVD drive. You say the problem has something to do with jmicron. Have you logged a service request with them, and/or Asus? Lemme know where you complained, because I'll go do it too. Neil

HI,

Great post, nice one!

an important question:

I am using an offline solution to fill out InfoPath forms and then sync them back to SharePoint.

How can I consume web services while offline ?

For example - build a local web service provider to sync with the original content web service and save an offline copy ??

I will appreciate an idea, perhaps I can convince the providers of my offline solution to also sync web service contents ??

Thanks

George.

Hi,

Well, made some investigations… if you have metadata offline, then all that is required is some local IIS and some logic to create an offline web service with your own client PC…

This might just be a nice solution…

For SharePoint offline solution i am using ShareGO by kwizcom -

# re: Interesting to see how the other side works@ Wednesday, July 25, 2007 10:59 AM

One other thing the industry always failed to ack is the creation of the multi-vendor SCA (Service-Component Architecture). While it remains to be seen (and proven), the reason for this is to address the single-digit market share of SUN's App Servers, Marketshare as well as shareprice. This is no known secret. Also being removed is SUN's JCP process.

Will this work ? Time will tell.

Also - it really all depends on what YOU think SOA is all about. If you are one of those who believe that it is a product enabler, you will find the presentation from companies who sell SOA products interesting with good alignment from products. If you believe that it is a style of architecture, from good practices, good org committment and buyin, then it really doesnt matter what products you use, does it ? Indepedent consultants should be able to go into these presentations with their own views instead of letting the vendors convince you otherwise. Thats why there will always be n camps and free-will ;)

If a vendor comes in a sell to a customer "That I have this super technology server that can monitor your processes, handle exception and change management" but the customer doesnt know how they would use all these. Wouldnt that be a white elephant ?

I think that is the biggest problem today we have in SOA - What are the concrete deliverables and how do we measure it ?

# re: Interesting to see how the other side works@ Wednesday, July 25, 2007 3:19 PM

You will hardly find objective evaluation in the industry, people's view are biased because of economical incentive, intentionally or unintentionally. This is particularly true for technical sales.

Popularity is hardly an attribute of technical merit. The same goes for market share, share price, love or loath of particular technolgy or buzz words.

It's the compatability that wins hand down, taking language, important element of software world, some people prefer being closer to machine, they use c++ while some people prefer the ease and large availability of high level libraries, they use .NET; some people prefer the RAD of scripting, they use Ruby/Python; some people do not worry about the sometimes chaos of Java world and get things rolled out; some people prefer a very well-defined framework and feels the sense of security while others feel the constraints associated and the list goes on. Compatability determines the happiness when you work with, lanaguage or technolgoy, on a particular technolgy. If that thing makes you feel relief from incompatability, feel happier, feel more achievement, discover more truth each day you use it, then keep going ahead.

The above is from individual's perspective, turning around from the company's perspecitve, if you keep people happy doing each own's work, of course this is a two-way process, not to be inflicted with incompatible agendas, the project undertaken is bound to be done quicker and neater, and eventually please the customer too.

Don't quite understand what you mean...

No, I don't  believe SOA is a product enabler. I believe it is a style of architecture. But unless the company is going to build everything by itself, they would be looking at vendors to help them... But what does MS has to help their customers? Besides ESB, the rest of the piece is still not there...

Only MS sells technology to the customer, and it depends on individual tech sales ppl to craft how the story how it may help in the organisation. But in this training, the vendor teaches its sales and partner exactly which area to probe, what exactly to probe, which product to put in, which functionality to address certain pains, who your competitor is going to be, and how to counter them. It is never about product feature...

What are the concrete deliverables, how to measure it, the vendor already has all these thought out carefully...

Commanders are still human, they do make errors. Sometimes. doesn't mean what they say we follow blindly. How many commanders in Singapore have go thro' an actual war experience, may I asked?

1. If you treat your men bad, how they going to fight for you on the battlefield when their welfare are compromised?

2. They often view results more important than the welfare of the men. Sometimes, they think what they do should be non-discussable , not open to suggestions. If we sit down and discuss sometimes, we may have a better solution that saves time and effort.

Yup, but I could actually make it if I asked my officer for early release, since it's stayout night (the first in 6 ICT!!!) but I dread the thought of him not giving me, or giving me a really impossible time to reach on time.

Daren,

I agree that commanders are still human. but after 6 ICTs, and some of the officers are going through management courses, I can only sigh. A few of us even joked about rejecting the employment offer if we realise that one of our officers might be our boss!

I don't agree about needing actual war experience to know how to lead and manage our men. In fact, I would be more forgiving if the officer is a regular, (and some regulars, like my RSM, is even more understanding with the fact that we are or NS-Men). In fact, I think that the facts that these officers have a civilian job, and those jobs would have teach them how to manage people better. I mean which manager won't face resource issue at any point in his career? Managers in my company is constantly handling this...

i'm sure Intel will do the same (and actually does the same) with their CPUs. you'd notice that some Intel CPUs have same clock speed but different cache sizes. I reckon that some of them may have part of their cache memory defective, so the defective sections are disabled and they are marked as CPUs with lower L2 cache capacity.

same concept applies to the manufacture of hard disks today and floppy disks in an earlier era :P

Hi there. I've subscribed to your blog for a while, and it's always provided good information about Sharepoint. So, first of all, thanks for the willingness to share what you know. I really appreciate it. I've run across a problem with the new version that we had nailed down in 2003 thanks to your blog (http://community.sgdotnet.org/blogs/kitkai/archive/2005/10/11/21957.aspx). The solution doesn't seem to work in 2007 -- the AclVer.aspx file isn't around any more, and grepping through the 12 hive doesn't show where the variable (strMailSubject) is, nor any of the wording in the message. Drop me a note to (jporter) (at) (regis.edu) and let me know if you have any idea what's going on here; we're all at a loss. I tried emailing you through your form, but got a bounce message.

I am also a Windows Server MVP and I urge Microsoft support for your initiative. I was planning to replace Vista on my notebook with Windows Server 2008--because of the tighter GUI response in Server 08, and to run 64-bit VMs for labing stuff on the road. However, if I lose all sleep mode capability on the notebook, I will not proceed with that plan, I will not be able to use Windows Server 2008 on my notebook, and I will remain without a way to model 64-bit server and client solutions for my customers and Microsoft on my notebook. Retaining sleep capability is mandatory on my notebook.

# re: Social Computing, distractions or a useful tool@ Tuesday, June 10, 2008 11:27 PM

Great summary on the social networking. However, there are more to social networking than getting people connected. Here, you're focusing on the technology aspect. On being connected. It's not a wrong view. Yet, if we take one step back, there is the other side of the social networking, that it, building the network itself. Or the culture. This involves giving and taking. Sharing. Being in the same context and same page. That is when social network will nourish, rather than expand. And this is no small feat. It doesn't happen in a snap. With this in mind, it is no wonder that managements still doubt the benefits of social networking in office environment it will bring, not to mention the unproductivity, especially in Singapore, when internet connection privilege is much being "abused" by high number of super-powered attacks on friends on facebook, or browsing friends' photos in friendster (and later claim to the supervisor for being overworked).

And yes, if the company manage to set a proper performance KPI, it will be ideal to see whether having social networking application will help or break an individual. However, performance KPI is often subjective, and it is difficult to relate directly between the hours used on social networking sites in regards to x% of job performance (in management term, it is just a proxy measure).

# re: Looking for anyone who has project that is based in this region, and is using TDD@ Monday, June 23, 2008 9:49 AM

i personally practise TDD, and to me it's a very effective way of designing code that's "malleable."

it took some time for me to "get" it though. it is quite a challenge to get a whole team to adopt TDD from scratch. there will definitely be some in the team that will "regress" to their old ways because of this.

TDD is just one of the aspects of XP. is XP for you? it depends...it's a radical shift in project management thinking. you have to identify what practices you can implement and if your clients will agree to adopt them as well (if you do XP but your clients prefer waterfall, that's a recipe for disaster). then from there you can decide if XP is for you.

anyhow, i think the biggest benefit would be to adopt TDD (assuming you have senior guys in your team who are experienced in TDD, to help the junior guys) and an iterative process of development, instead of a big design upfront/big bang output that's typical of waterfall.

my 2 cents...

# re: Looking for anyone who has project that is based in this region, and is using TDD@ Tuesday, July 01, 2008 3:25 PM

Hi kitkai, I can't say that i'm already a TDD practitioner my self, but for the last couple of months, i'm trying to learn and apply it to my current work. Here are my 2 cents ;) 1. it's hard to "get" TDD concept (agree with cruizer), I find that it depends on the our own mindset, the more comfortable we are in our current non-TDD way of thinking, it gets tougher to change into TDD, because it really seems like an extra effort to create the tests initially. 2. all the companies that i have worked for, they are used to the Microsoft project style planning (waterfall) where usually all the work items with the schedule need to be defined upfront before we kick start the project. I'm really curious actually how many companies in Singapore have applied non-waterfall methodology such as agile, scrum, etc. 3. design first or test first? for example, I like the design specification to be clear and in detail before we start the development, but with TDD, we create tests then the code and do lots of refactoring. how much deep in details should we put in the design specification with TDD now? 4. the test boundaries, what kind of things should we test? i found that the book below is a good reference to start with : Pragmatic Unit Testing in C# with NUnit, 2nd Ed., 2nd Edition by Andy Hunt and Dave Thomas with Matt Hargett 5. TDD is a broad topic, it involves lot of things such as mocking, automated testing, automated build, continous integration. how i feel about TDD, i'm a believer and a follower ;) but I would think that TDD is just a good way to follow, but it's not the silver bullet for all cases, it's the good communication that really helps in a project.

# re: Looking for anyone who has project that is based in this region, and is using TDD@ Thursday, July 03, 2008 3:35 PM

best way to start TDD is to ignore the "T" == tests. it's about design, not testing. perhaps the BDD (behaviour driven development) captures the idea better, since the tests are not about testing for correctness (though that is a side effect or artifact of the process) but for specifying the correct/intended behaviour of the code being created.
