Joel's "Smart and Gets Things Done: Joel Spolsky's Concise Guide to Finding the Best Technical Talent"

Joel writes quite well, and particularly good at the subtitle for his book, though this time he chose not to break his record long subtitle of his previous book (that book is Joel on Software: And on Diverse and Occasionally Related Matters That Will Prove of Interest to Software Developers, Designers, and Managers, and to Those Who, Whether by Good Fortune or Ill Luck, Work with Them in Some Capacity). :)

This is not a book about GTD techniques; it is again a collection of full length essays from his blogs (of course with some touch up for consistency)

  • Introduction
  • Chapter 1: "Hitting the High Notes
  • Chapter 2: "Finding Great Developers"
  • Chapter 3: "A Field Guide to Developers"
  • Chapter 4: "Sorting Resumes"
  • Chapter 5: "The Phone Screen"
  • Chapter 6: "The Guerrilla Guide to Interviewing"
  • Chapter 7: "Fixing Suboptimal Teams"
  • Appendix: "The Joel Test"
  • It says a lot about his observation, opinion, theory on hiring and interviewing process for technical roles particularly for developer. There would be generalizations that not all would praise or agree, but it is just a book welcoming thought of our own, so "开卷有益".

In my opinion rarely there are absolute rules for finding the talent. The book is from the point of view of employer, but certainly is thought provoking and useful for those who look for employers too. Be warned that, knowing the rule of finding the talent, knowing how a talent being scored, does not make you more talented, apart from facilitating you from being discovered. After all, it's essential in a hiring process to know who truly is good and who pretends to be good. It's about chemistry too.
